Established in 2016, the Data Institute serves as the umbrella organization for data science research and programming at the University of San Francisco. The Data Institute offers the MS in Data Science (MSDS), BS in Data Science (BSDS) and continuing education certificates, hosts interdisciplinary postdoctoral fellows, and is home to initiatives focused on environment and social impact, the Wicklow AI Medical Research Initiative (WAMRI) and the Center for Applied Data Ethics (CADE). The MSDS and the BSDS programs, with the support of the Data Institute, are interdisciplinary degree programs with a diverse and growing community of full-time faculty members from data science, mathematics and statistics, and computer science.
MISSION
• Foster new partnerships between industry and academia to tackle industrial data science problems
• Build an inclusive community of data scientists to advance research in data science and deep learning
• Create innovative curriculum to support the training of the next generation of data scientists
• Partner with nonprofit and civic organizations to seek data-driven solutions to address pressing social, economic and environmental challenges

Executive Director
Associate Professor of Mathematics
At the Center for Applied Data Ethics (CADE), we are working to address ethical issues such as the magnification of unjust bias, increased surveillance, spread of disinformation, alarming uses of predictive policing, a lack of accountability for tech companies, and more. Our focus is on having a direct, practical impact.

Code of Conduct
The CADE Tech Policy Workshop organizers are dedicated to providing a space and program for attendees and speakers to engage in the open exchange of ideas, the freedom of thought and expression, and respectful scientific debate. We value the participation of every participant of the workshop and want all who attend to have an enjoyable and rewarding experience. The Tech Policy Workshop is intended to facilitate collaborations between those in tech and in policy, as well as highlight the need for policy interventions in addressing ethical issues to those working in tech.
We ask that participants generously share what they know; mentor others when the opportunity arises; and extend respect, courtesy, and compassion to other attendees, regardless of whether or not opinions differ.
Every attendee, speaker, exhibitor, organizer, and volunteer at any event or activity connected with the CADE Tech Policy Workshop is expected to abide by this Code of Conduct:
"CADE Tech Policy Workshop provides a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, or religion. We do not tolerate harassment of workshop participants in any form. All communication will remain appropriate for a professional audience of any background. We do not permit the following behaviors at any time during the workshop, in any venue and communication channels, including social media: using sexual language or imagery; insulting, maligning, or harassing other attendees; or telling sexist, racist, or exclusionary jokes."
CADE staff will enforce this Code throughout the event and may ask anyone violating this Code to leave the workshop.
Thank you for helping make the CADE Tech Policy Workshop a positive, inclusive, and appropriate experience for all who attend.
